Getting a clear shot of this striking yellow-tailed black cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus funereus) required patience and luck. I found it to be quite aloof but on this day it was busy eating. The yellow-tailed cockatoo is one of largest species of parrot (55 to 65 cm) and easily identified by its mostly black plumage, with a yellow cheek patch. The total population is estimated to be around 25,000 individuals in Australia.
Trivia: Cockatoos can differentiate between human faces and remember them over long periods. This week I had a great time capturing the energy and excitement of a local band on stage, The Anomalies. This four piece rock and pop band is from the Illawarra. Check them out...
Australian King Parrot - This beautiful 43cm (17in) parrot species is widespread along Australia's east coast, from Queensland to Victoria.
Male king parrots have a distinctive bright red head, chest, and orange beak (as shown in this photo), while females have a mostly green head and chest, red belly, and a dark grey beak. To celebrate Bird Week 2025 (2-8 November) I'm posting a photo of a pink galah. This Australian bird looks for food on the ground, so this was a different kind of bird shoot for me as I'm usually walking looking up at the tree canopy. This is a male galah as the female has pink, red or light brown eyes. Galahs are very fast – they can fly up to 70km per hour.

It's a good day when I get a shot like this... This Eastern Yellow Robin is only small but packs a punch when it comes to colour.
To celebrate Bird Week (14 - 20 October 2024) I'm posting this photo of a red-tailed black-cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus banksii) feeding on the seeds of a casuarina tree.
The spectacular Australian yellow Waratah (Telopea Speciosissima) and many other native flowers are in bloom at the moment. Enjoy spring!
