Getting out into the surf is a skill in itself at Dee Why beach where the crashing waves are a challenge.
I spotted this Swamp Wallaby in Jervis Bay (south of Sydney). It's a small (66 cm - 85 cm), shy macropod marsupial that likes to hide in thick undergrowth. I got this shot when this "Swampie" heard me and looked straight at my camera.
When in 1915, Isabel Letham, who was 15, got a chance to try surfing with visiting Hawaiian surfer, Duke Kahanamoku at Freshwater Beach she probably didn't think so many women and girls would take up the sport...
Sulphur-crested Cockatoos are very noisy and this helps me locate them in trees more easily than other birds. These cockatoos use their movable crests to communicate. This inquisitive cockatoo is looking at my camera and seems to be saying "what are you up to"?
Avalon's 500m surf beach has some pretty epic waves when the winds are coming through from the north east. It's one of my go to beaches when I want to take surf photos. The American surfing great Kelly Slater (eleven-time world champion) is known to surf there when in Australia.
After being told that black swans were found in the area, I visited the lagoon several times and was eventually rewarded with a sighting of these graceful birds. Black swans are nomadic so not so easy to find.
I keep an eye out for Protea blooms every autumn when they first appear.
This striking flower is Protea Pink Ice. The Rainbow Lorikeet (Trichoglossus moluccanus) is a colourful and curious creature that's always fun to photograph. I find them on the flowers of shrubs when they harvest nectar and pollen.
Dee why Beach is popular with locals for its year 'round powerful beach breaks and nearby coffee shops.
This gorgeous Orchard Swallowtail Butterfly (Papilio aegeus) was spotted in Jervis Bay (New South Wales, Australia).
This is a large butterfly with a wingspan of approximately 12 cm. Taking in the light projections and 3D installations across Sydney city during the annual Vivid festival. TurquoiseImage.com
